If changing the world wasn’t incentive enough, here’s why you should join us:

We designed, built, and operated the world’s leading Stellarators.

We aim to commercialize in 10 years.

We know what we’re doing - our leadership team has over 150 years’ experience.

We’ve already been recognized for our work by the Department of Energy through an award and funding.

We accept no intellectual boundaries and celebrate creativity.
If you are searching for the best new ideas and share our vision, join us as a Radiation Safety Officer. This is what you need to know:
Location: Knoxville (TN)
Salary: Highly Competitive Plus Benefits
Contract: Permanent, full time
Reporting to: Senior Director Regulatory Affairs & Licensing
Your role in the mission:
We are seeking a skilled Radiation Safety Officer specializing in health physics to join our team here at Type One Energy. You will play a pivotal role in the development, implementation, management, and continual improvement of our radiation protection program essential for licensing and compliance to regulations and license conditions.
Your expertise in neutronics modelling & analysis, radioactive waste management, dose projections and radiation protection will contribute to the safe design and operation of our fusion energy technology. To develop, manage and implement a justified and optimized radiation protection program, we will also leverage the expertise that exists in the public sector, so you will also be responsible for managing relationships with third party stakeholders.
You will be conducting neutronic and photons analyses through MCNP simulations and subsequently shutdown dose rate calculation from resulting activation. The identification of radiation operational and protection quantities for practical evaluation of doses in the context of justification and optimization of our radiation protection program will be one of your key responsibilities (zoning and access control areas, radiation monitoring program including dosimetry, waste management program including transport, training program, testing and calibration of instrument, etc).
You will also have responsibility for advising on design and operating options to best satisfy regulatory requirements and ALARA principles. Another important component of your role will be to support the development of our safety cases for pre-licensing and licensing regulatory reviews.
- Perform neutronics and photons calculations and simulations to analyze neutron and photon fluxes, energy deposition, radiological inventories and source terms and dose conversion for practical evaluation against regulated dose limits.
- Develop, implement, and manage the company radiation protection program including the following aspects: physical protection, radioactive waste management and transport, emergency procedures, emergency preparedness & response, and decommissioning planning.
- Conduct risk assessments and provide appropriate recommendations for safety measures throughout the pre-conceptual, conceptual, final design process and operating of fusion systems.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including Physicists, Engineers, and Technicians to integrate radiation protection considerations into overall fusion reactor designs.
- Advises and trains Type One Energy staff regarding radiation safety protocols and procedures to ensure regulatory compliance as mandated by the relevant local, state, and federal regulatory agencies.
- Supports regulatory operations to meet the requirements and conditions stipulated in the operating license, including reporting requirements and other requests from regulatory authorities.
- Monitor compliance with operational safety margins, stop unsafe operation and report unplanned events to Senior Director of Regulatory Affairs and Licensing[
- Seek opportunities to create optimized maintenance and operational approaches to maximize ALARA for plant personnel thru best practices and innovative approaches thru the application of radiation safety principles
What you’ll need:
- Bachelor’s degree in health physics or a related field with a focus on radiation protection; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
- Proven expertise in radiation safety operations and neutronic & photons simulations, and basic knowledge of fusion reactor technology.
- Experience in performing neutronics calculations and utilizing simulation tools for dose analysis.
- In-depth knowledge of radiation effects & radiation protection, including radioactive materials and waste management and radiation monitoring equipment.
- Proficiency in relevant software tools for data analysis, modelling, and simulation.
- Good communicator with experience of liaising with third party stakeholders, ideally in the public sector.
- Strong organizational and project management abilities, with the capability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
